Running From God

Whether you're a saved born again Christian or a God-hating atheist, one day the thought of running from God will cross your mind. You may not consciously think it but it will show by the actions you make. In the end though, running from God isn't worth it and you would have wished you had made the right choice in the first place. Jonah, a prophet of God, is a great example in the Old Testament. God called him to warn the people of Nineveh of coming judgement but instead he turned and fled for Tarshish.

Jonah 1:1-3~ Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,  Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

If you look towards the end of the 3rd verse it says "so he paid the fare thereof." Whatever it is, sin has a price that is to be paid. It may not be now, but it's coming. Maybe you're doing something behind the backs of people and you think "Oh they don't know" well (teenager) you may mistake your parents or authorities to be dumb enough to not know, but God can open their eyes so that they can.

1 Corinthians 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

It's a common mindset for people to think "I got this" or "I don't need help." Well you're wrong in that. That's why you need to keep yourself from the possibilities of even sinning. For example, a guy and a girl shouldn't be in a car alone. Why? One thing can lead to the other and hormones can kick in. Don't fool yourself by saying "I'm strong enough to resist the temptation" or "Nothing won't happen, we are just friends." Friend, we cannot begin to even count the situations where strong Christian teens said the same thing yet failed because their flesh got in the way.

Jonah 1:4-12 But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

When running from God, it doesn't just affect you, but it affects the other people around you. People constantly watch, whether you're in public, church, school, etc.. it doesn't matter where but people are watching. Fellow Christians are looking at how you live your life and you're the light to many non-believers so when you leave their faith, it can pull others down also. Jonah thought he could get away with it but when God says something you do it. He will get a hold of your mind and heart and He can do whatever it takes to do so. People go around saying "Only GOD can judge me" Yes, and that's a VERY scary statement. We've said this before but sin has a price to be paid. God knows the thoughts and intents of your heart, you cannot run from Him.

Jonah 1:13-17 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. Wherefore they cried unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done as it pleased thee. So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows. Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah spends 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of the whale or as the 2nd chapter calls it a "fish." Which by the way evolutionists argue that a fish cannot swallow a human, but if you look there are accounts of such things that happened. The ending of Jonah's life is rather sad. The whale spits him up and he goes to Nineveh and gives the shortest sermon given. (Jonah 3:4) "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown." Immediately the people believed God and repented of what they did....

God wants to use you Christian. He has a plan for your life and when you're running from Him, you're running from His divine plan. This isn't your life! He gave you life and you need to use it to glorify Him and not for your own glory.

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

If you aren't saved, you can take care of that today before it's too late. Why wait? Why keep running from God? You'll face Him one day. At the judgement throne every knee will bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! Your time is coming. Don't wait till it's too late. If you are saved, there will be a time in your life when these thoughts may cross through your brain waves. Make a decision that you will stand firm and stay faithful to our Lord and Savior. Especially teenagers, don't wait till you're an adult to serve God. There is no 'magic number' where you have a desire to just jump in and go, that starts now even in your early years. It may seem fun to waste your early years doing foolish things and just partying, but it won't be worth it later.

Live a life with no regrets. Make choices that are godly and not fleshly.

Philippians 2:10-11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
